These thick and creamy chocolate overnight oats are the breakfast I wake up dreaming about. Made with Greek yogurt, each jar is loaded with 18g protein (no protein powder needed) and 6g of filling fiber thanks to rolled oats, chia seeds and unsweetened cocoa powder.  Meal prep 5 jars in 15 minutes and your chocolate fix is waiting in the fridge all week!

Three glasses of chocolate chia pudding topped with sliced strawberries are placed on a white tray, with two gold spoons and a small bowl of oats nearby on a pink marble surface.

Somewhere in my first pregnancy I developed a total sweet tooth, especially when it comes to breakfast. Turns out, it stuck and these indulgent-feeling chocolate overnight oats hit the spot every single time. Rich, spoonable chocolate flavour that happens to be loaded with protein and fibre so it will actually keep you full all morning too (if you love chocolate like me, you’ll wanna make my viral chocolate protein chia pudding next).

Now, I’m not gonna lie, my kids are medium on overnight oats, but they happily lick these ones clean every time. Especially when they get to top  them with mini chocolate chips (okay, sometimes they even get sprinkles). If you’re a mom, you know how big of a quick breakfast win that is.

Two glasses of chocolate chia pudding topped with sliced strawberries sit on a white tray, with two gold spoons and a small bowl of nuts beside them, all on a pink marble surface.

The dietitian in me has always loved overnight oats as a healthy ready-to-go breakfast, but most oat recipes are missing the protein piece, which is why I’ve become a little obsessed with adding Greek yogurt to mine. It rounds out my PFF trio (protein, fibre, and nourishing fats) and honestly the texture is so much better too (no slimy oats, just creamy goodness).

I love to whip up a batch of my high protein overnight oats base recipe when I want to mix and match flavour and variety, but honestly this chocolate version is one I can eat every single day without getting sick of it (same with these blended cottage cheese overnight oats. They honestly taste like a peanut butter cup and cake batter had a baby)

So let’s get into the deets for your new breakfast obsession.

Bowls of Greek yogurt, unsweetened cocoa powder, salt, milk, rolled oats, maple syrup, chia seeds, and vanilla extract are arranged on a marble surface, each ingredient labeled with text.

Key Ingredients That Make These Chocolate Overnight Oats the Best

Unsweetened cocoa powder (but not too much): Making overnight oats with cocoa (rather than melted chocolate or chocolate milk) is what delivers deep, true chocolate flavour without tipping into actual dessert territory. And the fact it adds an extra 1.2 grams of extra gut-nourishing fiber to each jar is a win in itself.

A note on amount: the first time I tested these I used a full ¼ cup of cocoa powder, and let me tell you, it was intense. Unsweetened cocoa can be bitter and drying, and too much overwhelms everything else. Three tablespoons gives you that rich, true chocolate flavour while keeping the oats creamy and balanced.

Plain Greek yogurt: My preference for these oats is to use plain Greek yogurt and sweeten it to my liking. And yes, it has to be Greek if you want to make these high protein (it adds around 10 grams of protein per serving, no chalky protein powder taste), and it whips the oats into that thick, mousse-like creaminess that makes each jar genuinely feel like a treat. And a nice extra bonus, between the yogurt and the milk, each jar covers about 20% of your daily calcium, something I’ve been paying a lot more attention to now that I’m in my 40s (and recently breaking my first bone. haha).

Chia seeds: Another ingredient that’s often missing from overnight oats that I will not skip in these. Not only are they rich in fibre and omega-3 fats (the nourishing fats in our PFF trio), the way they absorb liquid as the oats set makes these so much creamier than they would be without.

Old-fashioned rolled oats: The type of oat matters here. Quick oats break down as they soak into a softer, creamier jar (my pick in some other recipes for exactly that reason), but rolled oats hold their chew overnight, which is what these ones need against all that thick, chocolatey creaminess. And we’re still getting that beta-glucan, the soluble fibre that supports heart health and steady energy.

Description

These thick and creamy chocolate overnight oats are the breakfast I wake up dreaming about. Made with Greek yogurt, each jar is loaded with 18g protein (no protein powder needed) and 6g of filling fiber thanks to rolled oats, chia seeds and unsweetened cocoa powder.  Meal prep 5 jars in 15 minutes and your chocolate fix is waiting in the fridge all week!

Ingredients

Scale
    • 2 cups milk of choice
    • 2 cups plain Greek yogurt
    • ¼ cup maple syrup
    • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
    • 1 ½ cups old-fashioned rolled oats
    • 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ¼ cup chia seeds
    • ½ tsp salt
  • Topping ideas:
    • My go to: Raspberries or diced strawberries+ mini chocolate chips
    • Other Faves
      • Mini chocolate chips + sliced banana + drizzle of peanut butter
      • Blueberries + walnuts + mini chocolate chips (my hubby’s fave)

Instructions

  1. Add the milk, yogurt, maple syrup, vanilla, oats, cocoa powder, chia seeds, and salt to a large mixing bowl. Whisk well until fully combined and no clumps of cocoa remain.
  2. Divide the oat mixture between 5 sealable jars or airtight containers. Place in the fridge overnight to set (alternatively, store the whole batch in one large sealable container and serve from there as needed).
  3. Before eating, add your favorite toppings and enjoy!

Notes

Toppings: If you’re portioning into individual jars, you can absolutely add your toppings before refrigerating. Just know the mixture is fairly liquidy at first so some toppings may sink in. The flavour is just as delicious, it just comes down to whether you care more about convenience or keeping things aesthetic. I won’t judge you for either. Haha

Sweetness: These lean more dark chocolate than milk chocolate. If you like things a bit sweeter, adjust to taste with a bit more maple syrup before portioning it into the jars.

Storage: Store in the fridge in sealable jars or airtight container(s) for up to 5 days.
