Home Cooked Meals Without The Shop or Prep: Fresh Prep Review
As you might already know, I’m a huge fan of meal prep and having a plan for the week. Not the typical rice, chicken and broccoli day in and day out… all week long, but at least prepping a few core ingredients at the beginning of the week. This has a couple of major benefits. The week is so much less stressful when you’ve got meal ideas planned out and ready to go ingredients to throw together for quick meals. It also makes it a whole heck of a lot more likely that you will eat from home and get the good stuff on your plate, or have healthy snacks on hand before that 3 pm ravage starts.
As good as your intentions may be, sometimes (especially with the craziness of summer schedules. Anyone else with me?!) it’s just not possible to do it all yourself. And that’s ok! Be realistic about where you’re at, what else is going on, and without guilt figure out what’s going to work best for you at that given time. This won’t be the same month to month, week to week, or even sometimes day to day.
I get a lot of questions about what to do when it feels next to impossible to cook a good meal from scratch at home. Best takeout options? Freezer options? Meal delivery?
After hearing a lot about it from clients, I recently had the opportunity to try out Fresh Prep, a unique meal delivery service here in Vancouver.
This could not have come at a better time! It was right in the middle of our stretch of 4 weddings in a row and that weekend’s wedding was one that both Meik and I were in. This meant a really fun, but event packed weekend. We were literally out of the house from Thursday night until Sunday late evening, only popping in to lay our heads on our pillows before heading back out again. So there was no grocery shopping or prepping happening that weekend.
Fresh Prep is unique in that you’re actually still getting a home cooked meal- but without any of the prep or cleanup associated with it, and no grocery shopping! You might even be able to fool your family that you’ve done it all yourself if you lay it all out, just at the right time 😉
I found the whole process from ordering to getting the meal on my plate to be really straightforward and the food was delish!
Here’s how it works.
You head to Freshprep.ca, create an account and you’re ready to order. You can select whether you’d like the meals to provide two or four servings and how many you’d like for the week (two, three or four different meals). At this point you can have them select the meals for you if you don’t want to have to think about it, or you can modify the order with your preferences. Everything looked amazing and I love pretty much all food so I just went with their selections and ended up with a Blackened Chicken with Yam Mash, Green Beans and Creole Butter and Spaghetti and Meatballs with an Orange Almond Salad and Ricotta Garlic Toast. Pretty hard to be mad at that.
One of the things I really like about this service is that you don’t have to be home to receive the order. The foods comes in cooler bags with ice packs and can be left at your doorstep. They also give you a text when they’re on their way, another when they’re about to arrive and then call when they get there. This was super helpful in easing my anxiety that I was going to miss the call (even though my ringer was turned up to full).
When it came time to cook, everything was washed, prepped, cut up and labeled with directions to follow and a promise to get the meal on the table within 30 minutes. And that it did. I couldn’t believe the freshness of the meal, sometimes when you think of pre-prepped food, soggy, dull meals come to mind but these ingredients were vibrant, fresh and packed with flavor!
It definitely felt like a homemade meal but with a bit of a restaurant twist to it (make sure to check out the photo on the instructions for some fancy plating tips to make you feel like a pro)
As far as portions, I was a bit worried that it wouldn’t be enough for Meik but there was definitely enough food for both of us. I’ve also had clients who add a big salad on the side to stretch the meals for some leftovers.
All in all it was a great experience and was a huge help to fill in the gaps on such a busy week. If you find yourself in a bind with no time to shop or prep but want that same home cooked quality they are definitely worth checking out!
