This chocolate bark is so easy to make, and makes such a fun DIY and gift! All you need is good chocolate for the base and decorate as you please with your favorite Halloween candies! This decadent halloween chocolate bark recipe can be made vegan and is definitely kid friendly!
If you’re looking for easy Halloween treats to make, chocolate bark is it! These spooky Halloween treats could not be easier to put together (shhhh, don’t tell your recipients! haha ), there are so many different ways to decorate it, and I mean who doesn’t like chocolate, this dietitian right here definitely does!?
I was originally inspired by this recipe I found on Pinterest and it is one DIY that is almost impossible to end up as a Pinterest fail! So let’s dive in to this Halloween Bark recipe- aka Boo Bark!
What You Need to Make Chocolate Bark
For the base:
- Chocolate: I used a blend of milk chocolate and white chocolate because I felt like the white chocolate would add a ghosty little feel!
To decorate:
Just pick your favorite Halloween Candy, maybe a few sprinkles and you’re good to go! I used
- Kit Kat
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
- M&Ms
- Monster candy eyes (these are a must! How cute are they?!)
I’ve seen other variations with:
- Colored sprinkles
- Candy corn
- Reese’s pieces
Honestly your imagination is the limit!
How to Make Chocolate Bark
This Halloween Bark recipe comes together in 3 easy steps!
- Melt the chocolate for the base and spread out on a parchment lined backing sheet
- Top with Halloween Candies or alternative toppings of your choice (You could totally make this for other holidays or just because using different toppings!)
- Place in the fridge or freezer to set. That’s it!
How to Melt Chocolate in a Double Boiler
A double boiler consists of two parts. A bottom section where you add water, and a top section that sits on top where the chocolate will melt. You can also just use 2 regular pots for this when one pot will sit on top of the other, using the heat from the steam to gently melt the chocolate!
- Fill bottom of the double boiler (or bottom pot) with water and place on stove top on low heat.
- Once the water gets hot (not quite boiling) add the coarsely chopped chocolate to the top of the double boiler (or top pot) and allow chocolate to melt.
- Do not cover with a lid and stir the chocolate until smooth. You’ll know when it’s time to start stirring once the chocolate begins to look shiny!
How to Melt Chocolate in the Microwave
- Break chocolate into pieces and place in a microwave safe bowl
- Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring to make sure the chocolate doesn’t burn
- Remove when mostly melted, if there are a few unmelted chunks that is ok, the residual heat will continue to melt it and this is much better than burning the chocolate!
Once you’ve melted the chocolate, just spread out on a baking sheet and start decorating!
How to Make Vegan Chocolate Bark
It is totally possible to make vegan chocolate bark! Just make sure to choose vegan chocolate for the base. A few of my favorite brands with vegan options are Green & Blacks, Enjoy Life and Camino.
You’ll also want to make sure the candy toppings you choose are vegan. Words to look out for include:
- Dairy
- Gelatin
- Shellac or confectioner’s glaze
- Carmine
- Eggs
How to Store Chocolate Bark
On the Counter:
Store in an airtight container on the counter for up to a week.
In the Fridge:
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
In the Freezer:
Store in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
These are such fun Halloween treats for kids and such a great way to get them involved in the kitchen! I hope you love this Halloween Bark recipe as much as we have been!

Super fun, easy, and quick! Would be a great holiday activity to do with little ones. Made for a fun festive treat to take into work and spread some Halloween holiday joy this year— a few pieces each in a Halloween printed trick or treat bag/ziploc. Definitely recommend and will make again next year.
