As a die-hard coffee lover, I was not expecting to end up loving matcha this much. But between the unique flavour and that mellow caffeine buzz without the jitters or the afternoon crash, it has become a go-to for me. Especially when it’s blended up into this delicious, nourishing smoothie form (although this quick setting creamy matcha chia pudding and my cafe style high protein matcha overnight oats are in heavy rotation for healthy breakfasts around here too).

As a sometimes (ok often) overstimulated mom, one of the things I love most about matcha is steady energy lift without the jittery, crash-by-10am spiral that a second coffee can sometimes bring (my first coffee is non-negotiable. If you know, you know). That’s actually the L-theanine at work, an amino acid naturally found in matcha that works alongside caffeine for a smoother, steadier energy boost.

The dietitian in me also loves that because matcha is made from the whole ground tea leaf rather than just steeped like regular green tea, you’re getting a much more concentrated hit of antioxidants in every sip.

I also wanted to make sure that this smoothie met my PFF combo (protein, fiber, nourishing fats) so it would actually keep us full longer than 30 minutes too. What makes this one stand out from most matcha smoothies out there is the Greek yogurt base. Often, matcha smoothies are fruit-forward and lack any decent protein. Here, the Greek yogurt takes care of the protein and nourishing fats, and combined with the blood sugar balancing fiber from the banana it checks all the PFF boxes!

Key Ingredients That Make This Matcha Green Tea Smoothie the Best

Quality Matcha Powder

This might surprise you, but for this smoothie, I actually prefer to use culinary grade matcha. Even though it can be more bitter, once it’s blended with frozen banana, Greek yogurt, and vanilla, the bolder flavour smooths right out. If all you have is ceremonial on hand, it will still work great, but otherwise save the ceremonial for drinking on its own where those delicate flavour notes can actually shine. While ceremonial typically has more L-theanine, culinary can have higher antioxidant levels so both are nutrition power houses. Regardless of grade, look for Japanese matcha, ideally from regions like Uji or Nishio.

2-5% Greek Yogurt works best for this smoothie

Because this smoothie is lacking fat otherwise, I like to use 2-5% milk fat yogurt (or when I’m in the mood for a rich, milkshake-like smoothie, I love using avocado for those heart healthy fats. Just trust me on this one, this thick and creamy matcha avocado smoothie is so insanely satisfying!). Fat is our satiety factor and without it, this smoothie can leave us snacky 30 minutes later. The higher milk fat also has a smoother and less tangy flavour, and because the matcha already leans on the bitter side, this really helps to smooth out the flavours.  Trust me! I tested it.

Frozen Banana Always!

The first time I tested this smoothie I didn’t have any frozen banana on hand. I made it with fresh thinking it would be similar. It was not. After making it again, the frozen banana version is so much tastier. It’s cold, creamy and makes this smoothie thicker too (which I love).

Baby Spinach

Spinach is the perfect green for this smoothie (baby spinach leaves are even more tender)! It has such a mild flavour, it does not compete with the matcha. It also gives this smoothie that deep, gorgeous green colour that honestly makes it so much more satisfying to drink haha. And nutritionally, it’s a great source of plant-based iron, which so many of us mommas run low on, especially during pregnancy and postpartum!

Description

This creamy matcha green tea smoothie truly has it all to start your day off right. Just 5 minutes to blend up, it’s a quick breakfast with a calm focused energy boost from matcha powder, 23g of filling protein thanks to Greek yogurt (no protein powder needed!), naturally sweetened with frozen banana, and even your daily dose of greens (I promise you can’t even taste the spinach!) all before you’ve even stepped out the door!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt (I use 2-5%)
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • 1/21 tsp matcha powder
  • 1 frozen banana (about 1 cup)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup spinach (optional but recommended!)

Instructions

  1. Add the yogurt and milk to a blender. Add the frozen banana, matcha, vanilla, and spinach.
  2. Blend on high until completely smooth and creamy, about 30 seconds.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Matcha amount: Start with 1/2 tsp for a mild matcha flavour. Use 1 tsp for a stronger taste and bigger energy boost.

Banana: Slice and freeze ripe bananas in advance, or buy them already frozen (my go-to)!

Spinach: Completely optional — you won’t taste it, but it deepens the colour and adds fiber and iron. Skip it if you don’t have it; the smoothie still works beautifully.

Storage: Best enjoyed fresh. If storing, refrigerate in a sealed jar for up to 3 days and shake well before drinking.
