5-Minute Silky Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse
This 3-ingredient cottage cheese chocolate mousse is rich, creamy, and ready in just 5 minutes! Whipped cottage cheese gives it a light and silky texture and a major protein boost (almost 15 g per half cup serving!), making it a fun and satisfying snack or dessert—also perfect for meal prep

As a dietitian and mom on the go, I know how real the snack struggle can be—especially when you’re trying to find something that’s quick, nourishing, and that your kids (and you!) actually want to eat. This cottage cheese chocolate mousse has become a go-to in our house for exactly that reason (if you’re not a cottage cheese fan, (try this Greek yogurt chocolate mousse instead!)
Now, let me be clear: this isn’t about replacing classic mousse. As a certified intuitive eating counselor, I’m a big believer in food freedom. Some days, this version is exactly what hits the spot—especially if you’re after something energizing or higher in protein. Other days, only the real-deal, cream-based mousse will do. And that’s the beauty, it doesn’t have to be either or!

Ingredient Highlights
2% or Higher Cottage Cheese: Blended cottage cheese is what gives this mousse its dreamy texture—and what makes me call it equal parts snack or dessert. The added protein it provides to this recipe makes it more filling, while also balancing blood sugar levels. I like to use 2% cottage cheese or higher for a couple reasons
1. Fat allows us to feel more satisfied after eating, perfect to make this recipe more satiating.
2. It gives this mix a better texture—when whipped, it incorporates air making it light, smooth and silky.
If you’re worried about the saltiness of cottage cheese, don’t be. The slight saltiness actually enhances the chocolate flavor here and brings the perfect balance to the final result!Dark Chocolate Chips: I initially tested this recipe with just cocoa powder and it was way too bitter. I then tried adding in some maple syrup and while that helped, it didn’t have that thick mousse-like textureI wanted. Adding the melted chocolate adds the perfect sweetness while balancing the tanginess of the cottage cheese. Plus, I’m not mad about the antioxidant boost!
How to Nail Making This Mousse

Melt the chocolate gently: Heat in 30 second increments, stirring in between each round. You do not want to burn the chocolate as it turns clumpy and grainy, which is no fun. If there are still a few unmelted pieces when you take it out, give it a good stir. The residual heat will finish the job without overcooking.

Blend until smooth then STOP! You don’t want to over-blend or it can become too thin.

Chill or serve right away: You can enjoy it straight from the blender (yes, I’ve done this many times!) or refrigerate it for up to 5 days. It does thicken up in the fridge, which I love and also works great if you did happen to overblend a bit!
Even my kids love this one, so I like to prep it for an easy and high-protein after school snack (and hey, moms need easy snacks too so don’t let them steal it all ;))

½ cup dark chocolate chips, melted

Melt chocolate in the microwave in 20 second increments, stirring in between to ensure it doesn’t burn (it’s ok to remove when there’s a bit of unmelted chocolate left, give it a stir and the residual heat will finish the melting without burning)

Surprisingly good!
Hubby and I loved the taste and texture but kids may take some time growing into it :))) I will make this again
So glad it was a hit for you and hubs! Maybe with repeated exposure the kids will come around. haha so happy to know it is being enjoyed in your house! Thanks for sharing Golnar!
Honestly! The best discovery for someone like me, with a sweet tooth after dinner.
This is the easiest and seriously most delish treat! A small little dish with a dash of coconut whip, get in my belly!!
If it’s a bit too thick I add a tiny splash on almond milk to make it easier to transfer from the blender to the jar and into the fridge she goes.
Love this one, Lindsay!!
Yayyy! This makes me so happy! Get it in your belly! Great tip to thin it out as needed! Hope you enjoy for many delish desserts to come! xo
Excellent
So happy to hear Robyn! 🥰
OMG! Where has this been all my life! Like other’s have said: someone like me with a sweet tooth needs recipes like this! Protein packed which is just what I was looking for. I’ve never regularly bought cottage cheese but recently got a MASSIVE thing from costco and needed to find recipes to use it up. This is now my go-to! Thanks
Ok this might just be the best comment ever! haha so glad you are enjoying these Elise! Excited to hear these will be your new go to!
I haven’t made it yet but I bought the cottage cheese! Curious if a little bit of espresso powder might deep in the chocolate flavor?
Great question Terry, I think the espresso would be delicious in here, and yes, provide more depth of flavor! You may find it adds a bit of bitterness in which case the splash of maple syrup may help balance it out. Please let me know if you try it out!
Lots of calories. Just made it. Makes 2 servings roughly. You could eat less tho.
1/2 cup of cottage cheese: 110 cals
1/4 cup of choc chips: 280 cals
1 tbsp cocoa: 10 cals
1 tbsp maple syrup: 60 cals
470 for calories for 1/2 the recipe.
Scoop of chocolate ice cream is about 145 calories.
Yes more protein but…..
Hi Judy! Thanks for your interest and notes on the recipe. That’s right, I wasn’t trying to create a low calorie recipe here, but a fun alternative with a greater nutrition boost that would also keep you full and satisfied longer thanks to the protein! As you mentioned, you could make smaller portions if that’s a concern, and even top with more berries or yogurt to stretch it a bit. Or of course, stick to chocolate ice cream if preferred!
This was a great easy recipe. I stopped it with mixed fresh berries and whipped cream. What is the nutritional info for this recipe?
Hi Elizabeth! I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the recipe! Those toppings sound perfect! With an intuitive eating approach I haven’t included nutrition info to this point, but I know it can be helpful for some for a variety of reasons, so it is something I’m considering. In the meantime you can use something like Chronometer to do a quick calculation if you need it!
No nutritional breakdown?

My kids absolutely LOVED this! And I’m so happy they got a big dose of calcium and protein even as a dessert. Thank you!
Wohooo! Huge Mom win! So glad this was enjoyed by the fam Catherine! 🥰
We loved it! I think I would whip the cottage cheese first to get a totally smooth texture. Also, I think I might have slightly overheated the chocolate chips, so I added a bit of my morning coffee that had a little bit of 2% milk. And the flavor was great as well as the consistency. Will be a re-peat for me. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome Carol! And can I just say I think your coffee addition is genius! Great troubleshooting. Happy to know this will be a re\peat for you! 🥰
Sounds delicious if i thought it needed could i add honey instead as the other makes me physically ill
Terry from Australia
Hi Terry! Yes, you could definitely add honey! If you try it out I’d love to hear how it turns out!
