Whipped Greek Yogurt Chocolate Mousse (3-ingredients!)
This 3-ingredient Greek yogurt chocolate mousse is so insanely delicious and takes just 5 minutes to blend up. With the added bonus of around 10 grams of protein per serving and a good dose of calcium from the creamy Greek yogurt base, it makes the perfect satisfying snack or dessert, ready to pull out whenever that chocolate craving strikes!

As a dietitian and mom on-the-go, I’m all about snacks that will keep us energized throughout the day, but above all else, they need to taste amazing and be easy to prepare! Let me tell you, this Greek yogurt chocolate mousse ticks every box (no Greek yogurt? Try this irresistable cottage cheese chocolate mousse instead!)
While traditional mousse is typically made form heavy cream, I don’t always have it on hand. I don’t know what came over my but I was in the kitchen one day and an idea struck to test out a version with Greek yogurt. To say I was mind blown by the result of mixing just plain Greek yogurt with melted chocolate, cocoa and a pinch of salt is an understatement. It’s thick, velvety and with a decadently rich chocolate flavor.
If you’re feeling fancy, top it with this light and airy whipped cream with greek yogurt but even with some fresh berries of chopped nuts it delicious beyond words.

How to get the best version of this mousse
Use a higher milk fat % yogurt – and yes, it has to be Greek yogurt! I tested this with regular yogurt but it turned out kind of watery and it just didn’t give the same thick and creamy mousse-like texture. I like to use 2-5% Greek yogurt as I find it makes this mousse less tangy and more satisfying (fat is a satiety factor, slowing the rate our stomach empties, keeping us full longer too!).
Let’s make it together!

Microwave chocolate chips in 30-second intervals to make sure it doesn’t burn!

Toss everything into your food processor, blend until totally smooth but don’t overmix or it can become watery.

you can enjoy right away but I like to refrigerate at least a few hours or overnight for a thicker consistency.

Mistakes and Fixes
Overheating Chocolate: Patience is key here, follow the steps to microwave in increments or you’ll risk burning the chocolate which can result in some clumps or grainy texture. If this happens you’ll likely be able to salvage most of the chocolate from the top, but may need to toss any stuck to the bottom and melt a bit more.
Too Thick: If your mousse turns out thicker than desired, simply thin it out with a little more yogurt or milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Too Thin: Overmixing can thin out your mousse. If this happens, just refrigerate overnight and it will thicken up!

Description

-
2/3 cup dark chocolate chips
-
1 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt (I used 2%)

2 Tbsp cacao or cocoa powder
-
Pinch salt
Instructions
-
Microwave chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until melted. Let cool to room temperature.
-
Combine Greek yogurt, melted chocolate, cacao powder, and salt in a food processor and blend until combined. Do not overmix or it can become watery.

Serve as is or refrigerate up to 5 days (my preferred way to serve as it will thicken up in the fridge). When ready to eat, top with a dollop of yogurt, whipped cream or Greek yogurt whipped cream, and fresh fruit like raspberries or strawberries. Enjoy!

Thank you Lindsay! This mousse was so quick & easy to make with minimal ingredients that I always have in my pantry anyway. I made it ahead of time for guests, then just before serving, I added fresh raspberries & a dollop of icecream for a little sweetness. Delicious!!
You are so welcome Kim! So nice when you have everything on hand already! Love that you were able to enjoy this with company and love the topping choices!
Yum! I didn’t have quite enough cocoa so I added a but of peanut butter powder and instant coffee grounds. I topped with roasted peanuts. Very filling and satisfying.
Oooh I love these additions! I am definitely going to need to try this combo! So happy you loved it Kim! Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely delicious and so filling. This is such a great treat and is still quite nutritious at the end of the day. Win win . Will be making this over and over .
Ah this makes me so happy Joyce! So glad you enjoyed it and knowing it will be a repeat for you made my day. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave your review! 🥰
I would love some advice. This was so yummy but my chocolate hardened and left small chucks of chocolate in it so it wasn’t that smooth. Any idea what I did wrong? Was the chocolate too warm when I added it? Or the yogurt need to be room temperature? Also, did you use vanilla or plain Greek yogurt?
Hi Suzanne! So happy to hear you enjoyed the flavors! A couple questions – was the chocolate totally melted when it was added? Was it burnt at all (this can cause lumping!) and did you use a food processor or another kitchen tool? If it was fully melted and not burnt, it could have been that it just needed a bit more blending time? Lastly, did you blend it right away once adding the chocolate? If so, the yogurt shouldn’t have to be room temp but this could help, especially if not blending right away to prevent the chocolate from cooling and hardening when it hits the cold yogurt. As for yogurt I used plain for this one but vanilla would work too if you like it a bit sweeter! Hope these tips help, let me know how it goes if you try again!
Lindsey, I just made it again and it came out very well!! I must have burnt the chocolate the first time. I used a food processor and plain Greek yogurt!! Thank you!!
Oh I’m so happy to hear Suzanne! You are so welcome. Thanks for the update! So happy you enjoyed!
Just a tip I learned from my son’s cooking instructor- add just a little bit of coconut oil to the chips before microwaving- it will help them melt smoother without burning up 🙂
Yes! This is such a great tip Jennifer! I often do this when making chocolate toppings, but didn’t even think to add it for this one. Thanks for sharing!
Had went to a Mediterranean restaurant in my neighborhood and had a yogurt mousse and wanted a recipe since it was really different and delicious and came across this. Tried it out but used a flavored yogurt and added some chocolate cake to the recipe. Your recipe along with the restaurant dessert gave me the inspiration to experiment. Excellent yogurt base to be used. Healthy and delicious. Thank you.
Ooh that sounds delicious to add the chocolate cake and different yogurt flavors! So happy to hear it gave you the inspo to play around and that you were happy with the result! You are so welcome. Thanks for much for sharing Claudia!
Sounds easy and good but can i add fresh cream to it too.
Hi Luna! I haven’t tested it, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work! Would probably give an even lighter and creamier texture! Let me know how it turns out if you try it out!
Making this on the weekend for the first time for guests. How many servings will the recipe make?
Hi Katie! You can find the yield in the recipe card, this one makes 4! I hope you and your company enjoy!!
Hello! Any idea of the calories please x
Hi Kirsty! I’m so glad you’re interested in the recipe. While I don’t include specific nutrition info as I focus on an intuitive eating approach, I totally understand that it can be helpful for some! You can always use something like Chronometer or a similar app for more specific details. I hope you can still enjoy the recipe and look forward to hearing what you think!
I just had my wisdom tooth removal. I can only have soft food. This recipe saved my life. I added a little bit of my DIY pistachio butter in it, which enhanced the taste even more.
I hope you’re recovering well Minnie!! I’m so glad this recipe came in handy for you! The pistachio addition sounds absolutely amazing!!
Hi! How many servings would you say this makes?
Hi Anna! The servings are in the recipe card (under yield). For this one it’s 4! I hope you enjoy!
I would love some advice. I made this and followed the recipe exact but my mousse is not thick and mousse like. It has the consistency of a thinner chocolate yogurt. What can I add to this to make it thicker? I blended it in the food processor for around 20 seconds. Was that too long?
Hi Jenn! Yes, it’s likely it was blended too long. That happened to me the first time I tested the recipe and I ended up with a thinner yogurt consistency like you mention. Also just want to double check you used Greek yogurt? That would make a difference as well. I hope you were still able to eat it and a shorter blending time should help when making it next time!
As mentioned above, the melted chocolate hardened very quickly (nope, no ovefheated) when it hit the cooler yoghurt even though I cooled the chocolate a little and allowed the yoghurt to warm up a bit. So then I had to blend it more because it was very grainy. I’m sure it’s far too runny now (sitting in fridge). 🙁 The flavour seems good especially after I added a tablespoon of sweetener.
Hi Rose! I’m so sorry to hear that! If it does become runny due to continued blending, it should firm back up after setting in the fridge overnight. I hope that was the case for you! You could also try adding the melted chocolate to the food processor as it’s mixing for quick incorporation, or adding a small amount of coconut oil to the chocolate during melting (about 1/2-1 tsp) this would help keep it in a liquid state but could make the mousse slightly less thick. I hope these tips help and that you were still able to enjoy the mousse you made!
Absolutely amazing! I only have a hand mixer & had 0% Greek yogurt to hand. It came together so quickly, the consistency was more like over whipped cream, BUT- so rich and decadent!! I enjoyed every spoonful. Will use a lower setting next time.
Thank you so much for this recipe!
You are so welcome Lauren! I’m so glad you loved it so much and that it still worked well with what you already had on hand! Enjoy!
Is there a calorie count on this?
Hi Paul! With a focus on intuitive eating I don’t have nutritional charts built in but I know they can be helpful for some! I just did a quick tally. Here you go:
Calories: 200
Protein: 9 grams
Carbs: 20g
Fat: 10 grams
Hope that’s helpful!
Followed the recipe exactly and it’s pretty spectacular. Food processor for 10 secs with the cooled melted chocolate poured into the yogurt which had been outside the fridge for 15 mins. Added chocolate cocoa powder and lightly salted. Thank you for a delicious healthy dessert!
You are so welcome Jennifer! I am so happy you enjoyed it so much! Thank you for sharing, and including your success tips! 🥰
Hey there, so my chocolate also seemed fully melted and cooled to rom temp not hard. I also feel the yogurt was also at room but not warm. Have seems grainy but I’m still eating it…more like yogurt based chocolate chunk pudding haha. I use a hand mixer for this batch, but I also used nonfat plain greek yogurt, and Lillys no sugar added dark cc. Could this be the issue? The sugar substitute?
oh no! Is it possible some of the chocolate burnt? This can definitely cause graininess! And I have also found the hand mixer doesn’t give quite the same result as the food processor. I haven’t tried with the no sugar chocolate so I can’t say for sure, but my guess would either be that some of the chocolate burnt (this is usually at the bottom) or overmixing, which can cause the mixture to thin out. Chilling it in the fridge overnight should help it thicken up if you have any leftover! Hope these tips help Michelle!
Yup this helps. I ate one serving last night and oh my goodness it was so delicious even with the chocolate bits haha. Thanks for your response.
Michelle
You’re so welcome Michelle! Happy the tips are helpful and that it was still delish! xo
I don’t have a food processor, can I use a stand mixer or hand mixer? I really would love to try this but those are all I have!!
Hi Emerson! I haven’t tried with either of those so can’t say for sure. It would likely turn out a bit less fluffy as those wouldn’t incorporate as much air. You’d still get the same delicious flavour, so as long as you’re ok with a bit of a different texture that should work! I’d definitely recommend refrigerating to let the mixture set and thicken up a bit if using either of those. Let me know if you try it out!
This was amazing!!!!
I’m so glad you loved it! 🥰 thanks for sharing your feedback!
OMG. This is THE best mousse I have ever had. Since finding the recipe I have made it multiple times, and always double the recipe.. and.. I don’t share.😄 thank you for this recipe
